  • The Congdon Estate - Glensheen Mansion

Posted on July 30th 2007 in Glensheen Mansion

Glensheen MansionBuilt between 1905 and 1908, Glensheen, the historic Congdon estate, gives a wonderful look at the life of a wealthy family a century ago.  Set on the shores of Lake Superior, the 7.6 acre estate offers tours of the mansion and carriage house.  Visitors can also tour the formal gardens which have retained much of their original design.  This mansion museum is on the list of National Register of Historic Places.

And then there is the story of a double murder and the ghosts that may still haunt the halls.

In 1977 the dead bodies of 83-year old heiress Elisabeth Congdon and her night nurse were found.  Elisabeth’s daughter, Marjorie, was tried for the murders but was acquitted.  Murder and mayhem are twisted in this tale which you may not hear about on the official tour but books and information maybe found in the gift shop or in most book stores in the area.
