The Cancer Care Center provides support, counseling, pain management, physical therapy, hospice and more to aid the healing process.

St. Luke’s mission is the patient above all else while St. Mary’s mission is to bring the soul and science of healing to the people. Both hospitals provide respect for their patients and have an understanding that their staff working together will make it happen to the benefit of all patients.

SMDC and St. Luke’s have grown significantly over the decades providing health care, educational opportunities and research. St. Luke’s holds to its core values and while still moving forward with new technologies of care, they have not grown too large to neglect the personal care that they were built upon. They continue to be “committed to putting the patient first”.

    History of the Hospitals

    St. Luke’s Hospital
As the first hospital in the City of Duluth, St. Luke’s was founded in 1881 by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. What once began over a blacksmith’s shop is now a leading health care facility serving Minnesota, Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan.

With an organized trauma program since 1975, St. Luke’s Hospital has been federally designated as a Regional Trauma Center and was the first to be verified by the American College of Surgeon’s as a Level II Trauma Center.

St. Luke’s was also the area’s first medical facility to provide alternatives to traditional birthing rooms.

    St. Mary’s Hospital
St. Mary’s Medical Center was founded in 1888 by the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery. What began as a small hospital in Duluth has grown to be one of Minnesota’s largest medical centers.

Providing extensive trauma services and intensive care units is only part of the commitment to safety, quality and customer service. St. Mary’s provides a team approach to patient services with Collaborative Practice Teams discussing treatments on a daily basis.
