    Duluth Hospitals

Outside of the Rochester and the Twin Cities, St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, MN are where you will find the most comprehensive medical and health care in Minnesota. With regional and neighborhood clinics throughout Duluth and Northern Wisconsin, the SMDC Health Care System and the St. Luke’s Clinic System provide medical services for patients across the Northland.

SMDC affiliates are the Duluth Clinic, St. Mary’s Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior, Miller-Dwan Medical Center, Polinsky Rehabilitation Center, Pine Medical Center and the Duluth Children’s. Duluth Clinic neighborhood locations can be found in Hermantown, Lakeside and West Duluth. St. Mary’s Duluth Clinic regional locations can be found in Minnesota’s Iron Range cities of Aurora, Babbitt, Chisolm, Deer River, Ely, Hibbing, International Falls, Remer and Virginia. SMDC regional locations in Wisconsin include Superior, Hayward, and Spooner. St. Mary’s also offers specialty clinics to treat cancer, heart health, digestive health and children.

St. Luke’s provides patients with the CareNorth Health System – a partnership with the Northstar Physician clinics and the specialty clinics of Northland Medical Associates. St. Luke’s hospital is also partnered with St. Luke’s Center for Diagnostic Imaging, the St. Luke’s Foundation, Pavilion Surgery Center, and the Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors, MN. St. Luke’s has also partnered with the University of Minnesota, Duluth School of Medicine in the Whiteside Institute for Clinical Research.

In addition to its partnerships, St. Luke’s also provides family medicine clinics and medical specialty clinics for convenient access to top-notch health care. Locations include Medical Clinics in the Bay Area, Chequamegon, Denfeld neighborhood, Hibbing, Laurentian, Mariner Mall area in Superior, WI, Miller Creek in Hermantown, and in the Mount Royal neighborhood.

The St. Luke’s Regional Trauma Center is the leader in treating trauma patients. St. Luke’s also specializes in cancer care at the St. Luke’s Cancer Care Center where patients will find more than just treatment. The Cancer Care Center provides support, counseling, pain management, physical therapy, hospice and more to aid the healing process.

St. Luke’s mission is the patient above all else while St. Mary’s mission is to bring the soul and science of healing to the people. Both hospitals provide respect for their patients and have an understanding that their staff working together will make it happen to the benefit of all patients.

SMDC and St. Luke’s have grown significantly over the decades providing health care, educational opportunities and research. St. Luke’s holds to its core values and while still moving forward with new technologies of care, they have not grown too large to neglect the personal care that they were built upon. They continue to be “committed to putting the patient first”.

    History of the Hospitals

    St. Luke’s Hospital
As the first hospital in the City of Duluth, St. Luke’s was founded in 1881 by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. What once began over a blacksmith’s shop is now a leading health care facility serving Minnesota, Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan.

With an organized trauma program since 1975, St. Luke’s Hospital has been federally designated as a Regional Trauma Center and was the first to be verified by the American College of Surgeon’s as a Level II Trauma Center.

St. Luke’s was also the area’s first medical facility to provide alternatives to traditional birthing rooms.

    St. Mary’s Hospital
St. Mary’s Medical Center was founded in 1888 by the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery. What began as a small hospital in Duluth has grown to be one of Minnesota’s largest medical centers.

Providing extensive trauma services and intensive care units is only part of the commitment to safety, quality and customer service. St. Mary’s provides a team approach to patient services with Collaborative Practice Teams discussing treatments on a daily basis.

Garrison Keillor has become an important ally in recruiting family practice clinic physicians for International Falls, a lovely Minnesota resort town along the Canadian border. Appealing to those who covet natural beauty, a resort environment, boating, hiking, hunting, and fishing, Keillor crooned on Prairie Home Companion:

“The loons are calling, the fish are biting and the hammock is waiting. Some folks say this is paradise. On the map, it’s called International Falls, Minn.

The northern resort community offers a cornucopia of natural beauty, boating, hiking and hunting. What’s missing are Family Practice physicians. A shortage threatens to close the International Falls Clinic. If you’re a doctor seeking Family Practice Physician Employment in a beautiful resort setting, click here.
