Bill Watson has been an integral part of Northwestern Mutual’s story in Duluth and Northern Minnesota since July of 1999 and an integral part of the Northland’s close-knit community for 25 years.
A national standout, Bill played hockey for UMD from 1982-1985 and was a two time All-American collegiate point record holder in 1985. In the same year he became the 5th recipient of the highly coveted Hobey Baker Memorial Award, College hockey’s most distinguished honor for men. During these formative days at UMD, Bill met his wife of 22 years, Molly. From 1985-1989, he played professional hockey in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, after which he enjoyed coaching hockey at St. Scholastica & Western Michigan.

History of the Hospitals
St. Luke’s Hospital
As the first hospital in the City of Duluth, St. Luke’s was founded in 1881 by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. What once began over a blacksmith’s shop is now a leading health care facility serving Minnesota, Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan.
With an organized trauma program since 1975, St. Luke’s Hospital has been federally designated as a Regional Trauma Center and was the first to be verified by the American College of Surgeon’s as a Level II Trauma Center.
St. Luke’s was also the area’s first medical facility to provide alternatives to traditional birthing rooms.
St. Mary’s Hospital
St. Mary’s Medical Center was founded in 1888 by the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery. What began as a small hospital in Duluth has grown to be one of Minnesota’s largest medical centers.
Providing extensive trauma services and intensive care units is only part of the commitment to safety, quality and customer service. St. Mary’s provides a team approach to patient services with Collaborative Practice Teams discussing treatments on a daily basis.
