The University of Minnesota recently featured the Inn on Lake Superior in a short video showing some of the many environmentally friendly ways the Inn has gone green. Installing sink aerators to cut down on water consumption is not only good for Lake Superior, but it also makes economical sense. The Inn has also focused on eco-friendly lawn care and maintenance by using worm juice to fertilize, collecting rain water and using vegetation that doesn’t require a lot of water. Styrofoam is out and washable plates and silverware are in at the Inn. The Green Team at the Inn is excited to show you all of the ways that they have been able to do their part in the green movement and invite you to come stay with them soon.
We are excited to announce that starting in February of 2008 The Inn on Lake Superior will no longer be using styrofoam products during breakfast! We will be eliminating styrofoam and using real plates, bowls, and silverware. We are also working with WLSSD and Minnesota Waste Wise on other areas of the hotel. Keep watching as we continue to go Green!

The Inn on Lake Superior in Duluth Minnesota has made the decision to go completely chemical free with their lawn. When approached to be a demonstration site for EAGLE’s (Environmental Association for Great Lakes Education) Safe Lawn and Garden Campaign, ZMC Hotels and the Inn agreed to start a non-chemical program of lawn care. The program consists of building up the life of the soil with worm juice and spot-treating weeds with a non-toxic alternative. Worm juice, supplied by LaVerme’s Worms, is a by-product of composting with red wriggler worms. The local business sells worm juice as well as bins and worms for worm composting. Worm juice can do more for your lawn and garden than compost with its mix of highly potent (yet safe) microorganisms that can break up hard pan and improve the soil’s water retention. The build up of bacteria in the juice protects the soil and plants from disease. Concer brand fast acting weed killer is an organic alternative made of fatty-acid soap that can be used to spot-treat weeds. All of this is better for the soil and for Lake Superior. People come to Duluth for Lake Superior. The Inn on Lake Superior understands that as a business that is dependent on the beauty and health of Lake Superior, it is not a sound business practice to spray harmful pesticides and synthetic fertilizers on their lawn where it can make its way into the lake. The Inn on Lake Superior’s decision to go organic demonstrates their commitment to the health of Lake Superior as well as to their visitors.
