Willard Munger State Trail from Duluth to Hinckley
Posted on July 15th 2007 in Things To DoOutdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the north woods by biking, hiking, walking or inline skating along the Willard Munger State Trail. This trail was laid on an abandoned railroad bed. In Duluth, Minnesota, the trail going the 63 miles south to Hinckley begins just down the road from the Lake Superior Zoo behind the Munger Inn. While this MN state trail does not go through Duluth, visitors can pick the trail back up just north of the city. Visitors to this Minnesota trail will enjoy scenic vistas, the Minnesota state flower the Lady Slipper, wildlife, the St. Louis River, state forests, and meadows. The trail is paved and has some gently rolling hills.
Duluth, Minnesota Weather is notoriously fickle and incredibly beautiful. Here’s the latest weather-Duluth, MN style.

Saturday, the 14th of July I rode my bike on the Munger trail…it was awsome!
The day was sunny and 75 degrees, perfect biking weather. I started at the Willard Munger Motel and rode seven miles south. Perfect vistas, steep cliffs and channels blasted out of rock 100 years ago for an early rail line. The trail is a very gradual uphill going south out of Duluth, a very easy ride. And of course the whole ride back is all down hill which is great for a return trip.
A wonderful two hours.
P.S. I am a novice biker on a $100 bike and way out of shape and was able to do 15 miles easily and only had minor soreness the next morning.

Not sure what State park you are talking about, but you can rent bikes at the Willard Munger Inn which is at the start of the Munger Trail in West Duluth.

Thanks…I meant to ask if you could rent bikes at the start of the trail.
Do you know how far that is from downtown Duluth (near Canal Park/Lake Walk)?

It’s at 7408 Grand Avenue. Take I35 south out of downtown; take the grand ave exit. Its about 10 minutes from Canal Park.
